Quick guide

How to texture a clay slab

New to texture rollers? It takes about a minute.

  1. Roll an even slabAround 5 to 7mm for pottery, or 3 to 4mm for polymer clay. Rolling guides help keep it level.
  2. Dust if the clay is softA light dusting of cornflour on the slab stops sticky clay grabbing the roller.
  3. Roll once, with steady pressureOne confident pass gives the crispest pattern. Going back over it can blur the detail.
  4. Cut and buildCut your shape, then drape, slump or join as normal. Glaze pools in the texture for a beautiful finish.

Clay tool questions, answered

Which clays can I use your tools with?

Our texture rollers, sphere moulds and ridge roller work with stoneware, earthenware, porcelain, polymer clay and air dry clay. For very soft or wet clay, a light dusting of cornflour helps it release cleanly.

Will the texture survive drying and firing?

Yes. Our rollers press a deep, clean impression that holds its shape through drying and firing. Glaze pools in the recesses and breaks over the raised pattern, which really brings the texture out.

How thick should my clay slab be?

Around 5 to 7mm works well for pottery and 3 to 4mm for polymer clay. Thinner slabs pick up finer detail, while thicker slabs suit deep textures.

Can I use the same tools for food and clay?

Please do not. Once a tool has been used with clay, keep it for craft only. If you also bake, we suggest keeping separate tools for each.

How do I clean my texture roller?

Let any clay dry, brush it off, then wipe with a damp sponge and dry. Please do not soak it, put it in the dishwasher or leave it somewhere hot, as the 3D printed material can warp.

Do you ship outside the UK?

Yes, we ship worldwide. UK orders over £75 get free delivery, and US orders arrive with duties and taxes already included, so there is nothing extra to pay on delivery.

Can you make a custom clay tool?

Yes. Our Dorset workshop designs and 3D prints custom texture rollers, moulds and cutters, including rollers with your own pattern or logo. Send us your idea through our custom request form.

Where are your clay tools made?

Our clay tools are designed and made in our workshop in Dorset, UK, and developed with working makers such as ceramicist Karen Wiltshire.
